Education in Uganda

Nowadays, school education in Uganda consists of three levels of varying length:

• Seven years of elementary (age 6–13)
• Four years of lower secondary and (age 14–17)
• Two years of upper secondary education (age 17-19)

Elementary education is the only compulsory level in Uganda, as well as free for all Ugandan children age 6 to 13.

The government of Uganda recognizes education as a basic human right and continues to strive to provide free primary education to all children in the country. However, issues with funding, teacher training, rural populations, and inadequate facilities continue to hinder the progress of educational development.

Girls are disproportionately discriminated against in terms of education; they face harsher barriers when trying to gain an education and it has left the female population disenfranchised, despite government efforts to close the gap.

Education in Uganda is administered in English and the education program runs from February through to December.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Uganda. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.

There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrolment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

Currently, AKES in Uganda runs co-educational day schools located in central Kampala and Makerere. They are attended by over 30 nationalities at Nursery, Primary and Secondary levels. The School offers the Key stage 3, International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Students join the high school in Year 7, where they follow the KS3 British Curriculum KS3 till Year 9; the students start IGCSE course in Year 10. The final examinations for the IGCSE program in the School takes place in May and June every year.

In years 10 and 11, students must sit for Mathematics, English Language and six optional subjects at IGCSE level.
