You will find below a list of the most popular international and bilingual schools for expats in Serbia with fee information. The list includes nursery schools, primary and secondary (high) schools for you to find the right school to prepare for the International Baccalaureate and other accreditation in Serbia. Some schools may follow the American or British curriculums with English speaking programs while others are regulated under the French and German language and system.
From age 6 to age 16 education is compulsory in Serbia and this is divided into 2 equal periods following a mandatory 1-year pre-primary period. Consequently children spend 4 years at primary school.
Children enrol in primary schools at the age of six. Elementary school is divided into two stages:
After graduating from the primary school, students take a test called matura (lat. maturare). The test covers subjects that were taught in primary school. They are awarded the maximum of 40 points at the test. They also get points from their average marks from 5th to 8th grade, and the maximum is 60 points.
Both the points from matura and from average marks are totallized into the maximum of 100 points. Then, students make a list of their preferred schools and courses, and are sorted according to how many points they had gained - every secondary school has a limited number of students it takes. They get into the first school that suits them according to the points.
There are secondary schools that don't require the classical point system for entrance. Various music, science, philology and ballet schools sort students out based on their talent and skill, rather than their previous academic performance.
The 4 years of secondary education are taken at high school, where subjects include natural and social sciences, and languages and mathematics. The concluding examination is the Diploma o Završenoj Srednjoj Školi.
International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Serbia. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.
Admission and enrolment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
