The education system in the Philippines has gone through immense changes. It has been influenced by periods of Spanish, American and Japanese occupation. English is the primary language of instruction with Pilipino / Tagalog introduced in the late 1980s, and the United States school system is the basis of their programs. Formal education is for 14 years for 6 years of primary education, 4 years of secondary, and 4 years of higher education. The school year runs from June til March.
Elementary school (Paaralang Elementarya) is compulsory from grades 1–6, divided into 3 years of primary level and 3 years of intermediate level. Students take the National Achievement Test (NAT) to enter Secondary school (Paaralang Sekundarya). Secondary education has four levels from grades 7-10, beginning at age 12 or 13 and ending at age 16 or 17. Subjects include math, science, English, Filipino and social sciences, with optional curriculum of music, arts, physical education, and health.
International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (primarily multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in the Philippines. International schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.
There is usually local population, as well as an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.
Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
