The Anguillan education system is based largely on the British model with English instruction. It is free and compulsory from the ages 5 to 15. The academic year is three terms from mid-September to mid-July. There is a summer, Christmas, and Easter break.
The first 6 years of school are spent in primary school with a core curriculum of arts, mathematics, social studies, and physical education. Secondary school takes 3 years to complete. Graduating students work for their Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examination.. They must pass four subjects, then they study for two more years to complete their A-Levels. If they complete their A-levels, they should be able to attend university internationally.
International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in American Samoa. There may be some local population, but the schools are geared for an international student body. Schools usually follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, or France. Omololu International School was founded in 1994. It caters to local, regional and expatriate primary children from over 25 different countries. Instruction is in English with French and Spanish as foreign languages. OIS offers a curriculum that is in line with both the National Educational Standards of Anguilla and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). It uses a combination of Anguillian national texts as well as the most current international pedigogical methods. Uniforms are required.
